❧ What event has had the biggest impact on your character? In what ways has it changed the way they see others and themselves?
The event that has had the biggest impact on Hinata is seeing the Tiny Giant playing volleyball and being the ace. Hinata is really short and that’d always limited the paths that he saw before him. However, seeing someone small like him being such a pivotal member of a team changed the trajectory of his entire life. He believes he can be the next Tiny Giant and that he will be the best. This becomes the motivation and drive behind all of his decisions going forward.
That drive to become the best and that he can do that while being smaller than everyone else is core to who he is. Simply watching someone like him succeed had been the only spark he needed and made a tremendous impact.
❧ How does your character handle stressful situations?
To be frank, Hinata literally shits himself. Whenever he gets nervous about anything he generally has to run to the bathroom and is in there for by other’s reactions a long time. This happens frequently and he’s working on it but that’s just where his stress and nerves tend to hit him. Once he’s past that, he’s an eternal optimist and confident. He will believe in himself and others no matter what and no matter the situation or how stressed he is or bad it looks he just keeps going. He doesn’t let his stress or anxiety stop him even if it temporarily slows him down.
❧ Describe your character’s perfect day.
Hinata’s perfect day is sunny and clear skies. He’d get to go for a nice run and have a great breakfast. Then, he’d get to spend the rest of the day playing volleyball and training, except for meals which would all be his favorite types of foods. Of course, he’s going to be happy with anything if it means that he gets to get back out on the court and play some more volleyball. More important to him than the idea of spending a day winning games is that he would spend his perfect day playing challenging games that help him grow and become a better player.
He’d get to end the night reading a bedtime story to his little sister and then stargazing a bit before he goes to sleep himself.
❧ What three adjectives would you use to describe your character and why those three?
Optimistic, tenacious and resilient.
Optimism is a prime part of who Hinata is as a person. He’s always looking at the bright side and excited to keep trying and learning and growing. He doesn’t sulk or wallow about most things. He wants to find what he can take from any situation and use it to better himself and his game. He works to encourage those around him as well.
Tenacious and resilient because he does not give up or let anything keep him down. When Kageyama gets to go to a special national team training camp and Tsukiyama gets invited to a regional training camp but Hinata doesn’t he decides he’s going to infiltrate one of them. He decides not to go to the National Team one as he overheard his friends saying that someone sneaking in would definitely get arrested. Instead, he goes to the regional one and through sheer stubbornness manages to not get kicked out completely. He’s allowed to stay not as an active participant but a ball boy. Hinata doesn’t quit at this. He’s frustrated at first that he doesn’t get to play but he soon realizes (with the help of his coach) that there are things that he can only learn in his current position and he turns this seemingly demotion of a position into a way to practice his weakest skill.
❧ What would you consider their biggest flaw/weakness?
Hinata’s biggest flaw is also one of his greatest strengths. Hinata does not give up. He will fight with everything he has until the last second. He never gives in. He pushes his body to it’s limit time and time again. Because of this there’s a learning curve he has where he has to learn what his body needs to stay healthy. He has to listen to his coach and those around him on how to take care of himself and find a balance. So he has to learn to harness his perseverance and tenacity with more balance. It’s an extremely hard lesson to learn and it reaches a pinnacle at a crucial moment for his team that has repercussions that attribute to the end of their season his first year.
